When points start to cost money and your license
- 6 or more points within 3 years: MVC insurance surcharge: $150 a year, plus $25 for each point over 6, for 3 years
- 6 or more points: Advisory notice from MVC
- 12 to 15 points within 2 years: 30-day license suspension
The surcharge is separate from your insurance premium and from court fines. Three years of $150 is $450 before any per-point additions.
How points come off
With time. 3 points come off for each 12 months in a row without a violation or suspension.
With a course. An MVC-approved defensive driving course removes 2 points, once every 5 years, if you have points when you finish.
With an MVC program. Drivers facing suspension at 12 to 14 points over more than 2 years may be offered the Driver Improvement Program, which removes up to 3 points.
