Step 1: Get your completion certificate
After successful completion, the provider must issue a uniform certificate. Texas Administrative Code §84.501 requires issuance and delivery within 15 working days; TDLR’s enforcement plan also identifies late delivery as a provider violation. A provider may offer electronic, downloadable, mailed, or another approved delivery method. TDLR supplies certificate numbers, and a provider that wants to issue electronic certificates must have the applicable template approved. When does it appear in TDLR certificate validation?

Step 2: Check the certificate for errors
Before filing, check your name, completion date, court information (if shown), and course purpose. Never alter the certificate yourself. Contact the provider promptly, and contact the court too if a correction may affect the deadline.
Does the provider send it to court?
Do not assume so. Certificate issuance and court filing are different. Unless both the provider and court clearly confirm transmission, follow the court’s instructions and determine who must upload or mail it and what else is required.

Step 3: Ask whether you need a Type 3A driving record
Texas DPS lists Type 3A—Certified List of All Crashes and Violations at $10 and says it is the only DPS driver-record type usable for a defensive driving course; Type 2A and Type 3 cannot be used for that purpose. Step 4: Complete court-specific forms
The court may also request a certified driving record, affidavit, declaration, driver’s-license copy, proof of financial responsibility, or another document. A checklist from one court is not a statewide rule.
Step 5: Submit everything before the deadline
The deadline comes from the court, not the provider. A court may set deadlines for the course, certificate, driving record, and other conditions. Finishing early leaves time to correct errors, obtain missing records, or resolve upload problems.

When is the ticket actually dismissed?
Treat the case as dismissed only after the court reviews the course, certificate, record, forms, deadlines, and other requirements and enters the disposition. There is no fixed statewide processing time.

Use the case portal, electronic receipt, mail tracking, or court clerk. Keep copies of the certificate, driving record, forms, payments, upload confirmations, and delivery proof.

Ask the provider to correct or reissue an incorrect certificate; never edit it. If it is late, confirm completion status and delivery method and check spam. Contact both the provider and court immediately if the deadline is at risk.
