How Long Does It Take to Get Credit After Finishing?

Certificate or proof for insurance

Send the certificate to your insurer within 90 days after completion for the reduction to be retroactive to the completion date. After 90 days, the insurer may start the discount from the date you present it. This is a retroactive-start rule, not an automatic loss of eligibility.
DMV reporting for points
DMV says the PIRP course sponsor will notify DMV within 10 weeks after you complete the course, and DMV will then reduce active points by up to four points when applicable. If your completion is not recorded after more than 10 weeks, DMV says to contact the course sponsor.

Does Taking Longer Change the Insurance Discount or Point Benefit?
No. Finishing quickly is not what creates the PIRP benefit.
Eligibility depends on completing an approved course and meeting the program requirements. If those requirements are met, New York DMV says the course can reduce the base rate of auto and motorcycle insurance premiums by 10% each year for three years.
For points, DMV explains that point reduction can reduce by up to four the number of points used for certain suspension calculations. The tickets and points do not physically disappear from the driving record, and point reduction can be used only once in an 18-month period.
